If you’re a Christian, you’ve probably heard of fasting.
My philosophy until recently was that the idea behind fasting was that we deny our body food, which is a painful and very torturous process, to show God how serious we are about a certain matter. The difficulty of depriving ourself of food is a reminder to us of the issue at hand.
Looking back, I realize how very pagan this idea is.
Nowhere in Scripture do we read anything like this – beyond Paul’s statement of “bringing his body under submission” – in which context he is talking about enslaving his flesh to the Spirit so that he can run the race with focus.
The reason why fasting is torturous isn’t spiritual at all – it’s biological.
What makes fasting so hard – besides depriving your body of food, is glucose.
Yes – it all circles back to glucose.
When your body is used to using glucose for fuel, and your glucose levels drop, your body will demand more. You get hunger signals and cravings, eat carbs and sugar, you satisfy your body’s demands.
However, when your body uses fat for fuel, and not glucose, you don’t get this constant rise and fall of energy. Fat is more satiating, so you are not hungry as often, plus your body naturally uses the fat stores you already have as fuel.
One thing most people following the Ketogenic Way of Eating will notice is that they begin to fall into a natural state of fasting.
10 hours, 15 hours, 18 hours and even 24 hours go by before they realize that they haven’t eaten because they are simply not hungry.
This is called intermittent fasting.
In my own experience, I began noticing that fasting for 18 hours was completely natural. I wasn’t hungry, and so I ate when I was hungry. Some days I’d go as long as 24 hours before I was hungry.
It was then that I realized, biblical fasting was never meant to torture our bodies, it was meant to discipline our minds so that we could pray very focused prayers about the matter at hand. More on that below.
Intermittent fasting is healthy for the body for a few reasons, which include the fact that it gives our digestive system a rest, and it keeps our insulin levels very low.
There are also fasts called: OMAD – One Meal A Day, alternate day fasting, and extended fasting that can last from 48 hour and up to 2-3 weeks.
When extended fasting, you will hit a wall – very much like how a runner hits a wall that forces them to consider giving up or breaking through. When you break through this wall, you will find that the longer you fast the better you feel. Just like running!
And how I see this connect with biblical fasting is that critical period is the very discipline that Paul was talking about. Choosing to discipline our minds to focus on a very serious matter – as Jesus said that there are certain demons that can only be cast out through prayer and fasting.
It requires discipline.
Choosing to discipline our bodies in this way, combined with replacing the time we spend preparing food and eating with time in focused prayer and intercession, is the purpose of fasting.
Not trying to prove to God how serious we are.
We don’t have to prove anything to Him anyway – He already knows our hearts.
What is important to know with any fast is that you should first consult with your physician, especially before embarking on an extended fast and/or if you are taking any kind of medication.
