I still struggle to reconcile the picture of my reserved, quiet, 5′ 0″ mom who has the body of a teenager with the image of a person who says she always wanted to play drums. I just can’t picture it. But that’s what she claims. And she’s probably right. Leave her still for 3 seconds and she’s tapping out a tune on her lap. She does this a lot in church – tapping on her Bible. I’ll nudge her and whisper, “You’re doing it again!” And she looks at me with a twinkle in her eye – belying that reserved nature she puts forth – and says, “Let me finish my song!”
We were raised in a home with lots of music. My dad plays guitar and sings. He did a lot of theater in high school – He often reminisces playing the tenor barbershop quartet singer in The Music Man.
My uncle lived with us for a while when I was a girl, he is a fabulous guitar player, song writer and jazz singer. I credit him for instilling in me a deep love for old jazz.
Each of us – from 8 years on – took piano lessons. The rule was we had to take for 2 years, after which we could choose another instrument. Not taking music lessons was not an option in our home. My sister and stuck with the piano. My brother moved to drums and then guitar. He is one of those who never seems to pick up an instrument he doesn’t already know how to play. He is also a wonderful singer and songwriter.
And the interesting thing is that we all married musicians. My sister-in-law is a very accomplished pianist, singer and songwriter as well. She and my brother lead worship together. My brother-in-law plays drums and guitar. So does my husband – and he has written a song or two.
Music just seems to be a common thread throughout my family line.
And it continues.
