My kids love hot cocoa in the mornings. It’s their “morning coffee”.
Last year, my friend shared with me how she makes her own hot cocoa mix. It was so easy – only two ingredients! I had to give it a try. My first attempt was horribly bitter, I was rushing to add more sugar. Then it was too sweet.
Over the past year, I have dug around the Internet and tried various ratios of sugar to cocoa powder and have come up with two secret ingredients to make it absolutely perfect!
Here is my Perfectly Homemade Hot Cocoa Recipe
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Cocoa Powder (not chocolate powder, it must be cocoa powder)
Now for my secret ingredients….believe me, this took hot cocoa from meh to ah-mazing!
3/4 – 1 teaspoon salt
1 pkg (or approximately 2 1/2 teaspoons) of vanilla sugar
Mix well and store in an air tight container.
To make an 8 oz. cup of hot cocoa, heat milk (do not use water, or even water down the milk, it makes it taste very weak!) and mix in 2 teaspoons of hot cocoa mix.
To make it gourmet, add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla or a couple of drops of mint extract.
Top with whipped cream or marshmallows.
