Have you ever known that God tells us to renew our minds, but wondered what that actually looks like in everyday life?
Romans 12:2 tells us:
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
But knowing that we need to renew our minds and knowing how to actually do it are two very different things.
I’ve spent more than 40 years walking with Jesus, and I’ve used this process repeatedly when dealing with some of the most stubborn battles in my own life—fear, worry, anxiety, condemnation, insecurity, shame, and a victim mentality.
And I’ve discovered that renewing our minds isn’t simply telling ourselves to “think positive.”
It begins by allowing God’s Word to expose the lies we’ve believed and replace them with His truth.
So How Do We Actually Renew Our Minds?
Paul gives us a beautiful picture of this in Ephesians 4.
We are called to throw off the old way of thinking and put on the new person who has been created according to God in righteousness and holiness.
That means we don’t simply try harder to behave differently.
We allow God to transform the way we think, believe, feel, and respond.
And there is a very practical way to begin.
1. Identify your battle.
What area are you struggling with?
Fear? Anger? Bitterness? Insecurity? Greed? Lust? Anxiety?
Be specific. Write it down and bring it honestly before God.
2. Find Scripture that speaks to your battle.
Choose four or five passages that directly address the area you’re struggling with.
Don’t try to rush through them. You’re going to spend significant time with each one.
3. Write out one passage.
Slow down and copy the verse directly from your Bible.
Then identify the key words.
4. Study those words.
This is where your Bible study gets deeper.
Look at the meanings of important Hebrew or Greek words and begin understanding what the passage is actually saying.
5. Make the Scripture personal.
Take what you’ve discovered and rewrite the truth of that passage in your own words and in light of your particular struggle.
This is where Scripture begins confronting the lies you’ve believed.
6. Memorize it.
You won’t always have your Bible or journal in front of you when temptation comes.
But if God’s Word is hidden in your heart, you can bring that truth to mind wherever you are.
7. Meditate on it.
Return to that Scripture throughout the day.
Think about it in the morning. Think about it when you’re tempted. Think about it as you’re falling asleep.
Don’t just read God’s Word. Let God’s Word become the voice that speaks louder than the lies.
Renewing your mind is a process. We aren’t going to undo decades of thinking overnight.
But every time we recognize a lie and replace it with the truth of Scripture, we’re taking another step toward freedom.
And eventually, what we once had to consciously remind ourselves of begins to become the way we naturally think.
I’ve written out all seven steps in much more detail—including the Bible study process, Scripture memorization, meditation, and two videos where I walk you through the process.
