In my article “I Knew The Truth, I Just Didn’t Believe It”, I shared something God has been teaching me:
It’s possible to know the truth without actually believing it.
I knew God loved me.
I knew I was forgiven.
I knew I was a new creation in Christ.
But my thoughts didn’t always reflect what I knew.
I could read a Bible verse about God’s love and spend the rest of the day criticizing myself.
I could remind myself that I was accepted in Christ and still feel rejected when someone was disappointed in me.
I could know that God was faithful and still rehearse everything that might go wrong.
Eventually, I had to ask myself a difficult question.
What if the problem wasn’t that I needed more information, but that I needed to learn a new way of thinking?
My Mind Had Been Practicing for Years
Think about the thoughts you return to most often.
I’m not enough.
I always mess things up.
Why can’t I be more like her?
I’ll never change.
God must be disappointed in me.
Perhaps you’ve never said those exact words. But maybe you recognize the pattern.
Something happens, a thought appears, and before you know it, you’re rehearsing the same old story.
Over time, those thoughts can become so familiar that we stop questioning them. They feel true simply because we’ve thought them so many times.
But familiarity isn’t the same as truth.
And a thought isn’t automatically true just because it feels true.
Our minds need to learn to recognize the difference between what we feel and what God says.
Renewing My Mind Meant Changing What I Rehearsed
Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
For a long time, I understood that verse in principle. But I began to realize that renewing my mind had to become something I practiced, not merely something I believed was important.
When an old thought surfaced, I needed to stop and examine it.
Was this thought consistent with Scripture?
Was I accepting a label God had never given me?
Was I allowing fear, rejection, or past experiences to tell me who I was?
Then I needed to bring that thought to God’s Word.
If I thought, I’m not enough, I needed to remember that my worth wasn’t measured by my performance.
If I thought, I’ll never change, I needed to remember that God was still at work in me.
If I thought, I’m rejected, I needed to return to the truth that I am accepted in Christ.
This wasn’t about pretending that painful emotions didn’t exist.
It was about learning not to let those emotions have the final word.
I had spent years rehearsing thoughts that tore me down. Now I needed to practice thinking in agreement with God’s truth.
This Is Why Renewing Your Mind Takes Practice
We don’t develop new patterns of thinking simply by reading a verse once.
We return to the verse.
We write it down.
We meditate on what it means.
We pray over it.
And when the old thought returns, we bring ourselves back to the truth again.
Sometimes we have to do this repeatedly throughout the same day.
That’s not failure.
That’s practice.
The goal isn’t to condemn ourselves whenever an old thought appears. The goal is to learn how to respond differently when it does.
Little by little, we’re learning to recognize thoughts that once went unquestioned and replace them with truth we can stand on.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
This is the heart behind Walk With Me.
I don’t want to simply tell you that your mind can be renewed. I want to walk alongside you as you learn how to put God’s Word into practice in your everyday life.
Inside Walk With Me, I guide women through a step-by-step process of recognizing thought patterns, examining them in light of Scripture, meditating on God’s truth, and learning to live from that truth.
We take it one thought at a time.
One Scripture at a time.
One small step at a time.
Because I know what it’s like to have the right answers in your head while still struggling to believe them in your heart.
And I know how important it is to have someone walk with you while you learn a new way of thinking.
You don’t have to spend the rest of your life believing every thought you’ve always believed about yourself.
God’s Word gives you a different foundation.
And you can begin practicing that truth today.
