What if the emptiness you’re feeling isn’t because you’re not trying hard enough—but because you’re trying to fill something that was never meant to hold water?
For years, I thought the answer to spiritual growth was simple.
Try harder.
Pray more.
Be more disciplined.
Read one more book.
Find one more system.
Become a better Christian.
Yet somehow, I always seemed to end the day feeling like I’d fallen short.
Then I came across a verse in Jeremiah that stopped me in my tracks.
“For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.”
Jeremiah 2:13
I couldn’t stop thinking about those words:
Broken cisterns.
A cistern exists for one purpose—to hold water.
But what good is a cistern full of cracks?
No matter how much water you pour into it...
...it always ends up empty.
And suddenly I realized...
That was me.
I kept trying to fill my life with things I hoped would finally make me feel satisfied.
More productivity.
More accomplishment.
More discipline.
More approval.
More “doing better.”
Every one of those things was another bucket of water poured into a broken cistern.
It never lasted.
Then the Lord gently reminded me of something I had missed for years.
He never asked me to become the source.
He is.
This short reflection only scratches the surface of what God showed me through Jeremiah 2:13. In the full article, I unpack the powerful picture of broken cisterns, explain why we spend so much of our lives striving to fill ourselves, and share how this one verse completely changed the way I see my identity in Christ.

God never intended us to spend our lives trying to become better wells.
He simply asks us to stay connected to the Fountain.
That’s why Jesus told the Samaritan woman that He could give her living water.
She came looking for water.
Jesus offered Himself.
And that’s still His invitation today.
If you’ve been exhausted from trying to become “enough,” maybe it’s because you’ve been trying to fill a broken well instead of drinking from the Living Water.
You don’t have to manufacture joy.
You don’t have to manufacture peace.
You don’t have to manufacture purpose.
You simply remain connected to Christ.
Everything else flows from there.
Want to go deeper into your identity in Christ?
I’ve gathered my Bible studies, journals, Scripture cards, prayer resources, and other tools into one place so you don’t have to hunt for them.

Appreciate this reminder to focus on living water. This is a haunting question: "But what good is a cistern full of cracks?"
