Have you ever noticed how easy it is to carry labels that God never gave you?

Maybe you’ve worn labels like failure, rejected, unworthy, not enough, or damaged. Perhaps those labels came from painful experiences, words spoken over you, or mistakes you’ve made along the way.

Even after coming to Christ, many believers continue to define themselves by their past instead of by what God says about them.

The Bible shows us that this isn’t a new struggle.

In Deuteronomy 4:20, Moses reminded the Israelites of something remarkable:

“But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be His people, an inheritance, as you are this day.” (NKJV)

God didn’t simply rescue Israel from Egypt.

He rescued them to be His people.

That was always His purpose.

Yet as you continue reading the Old Testament, you quickly discover that although Israel left Egypt physically, they often continued to think like slaves. They grumbled when life became difficult. They longed for the familiarity of Egypt. They turned to idols instead of trusting the God who had delivered them.

The chains had been broken...

But their minds had not yet been renewed.

I think many Christians can relate.

Jesus has delivered us from something far greater than Egypt. He has rescued us from the slavery of sin, the penalty of death, and the eternal separation that awaited us apart from Him. You could say He has brought us out of our own “Egypt”—the fiery furnace of sin and its consequences.

Yet how often do we continue living as though nothing has changed?

We carry the labels of our past instead of embracing the identity God has given us.

We say:

“I’m broken.”

“I’m a failure.”

“I’m too damaged for God to use.”

“I’ll never change.”

Those statements may describe experiences you’ve had.

They may describe battles you’ve faced.

But they do not describe who you are in Christ.

One of the enemy’s greatest strategies is to convince believers to keep wearing labels that Jesus died to remove.

God wants to strip away every false identity and replace it with His truth.

That truth echoes throughout Scripture. When Peter wrote to believers in 1 Peter 2:9, he intentionally used the same language God had originally spoken over Israel:

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people...”

Think about that.

The titles God gave His covenant people point us to the identity every believer now has in Christ.

You are not defined by your worst day.

You are not defined by your trauma.

You are not defined by your failures.

You are not defined by what someone else said about you.

You are defined by what God says about you.

That’s why renewing our minds is so important. Freedom isn’t just about what Jesus delivered us from. It’s also about learning to live in the freedom He delivered us for.

My prayer is that as we continue this Identity in Christ Journey, God will gently expose every label that doesn’t belong and replace it with the truth of His Word.

Because when we finally believe what God says about us, we begin to live like people who have truly been set free.
