I will never forget the afternoon I stood in our mudroom, clutching my phone during a video call with my parents.
Tears streamed down my face.
For years, I knew both of my boys faced challenges.
But on that particular day, I was confronted with the reality that our youngest son’s autism might affect his future in ways I had not fully processed before.
And suddenly, the floodgates opened.
What if he struggles his whole life?
What if he never becomes independent?
What if life is always harder for him than it needs to be?
What if I can’t help him?
One fearful thought became twenty.
Then fifty.
Then a hundred.
I stood there trembling under the weight of questions I couldn’t answer.
If you’ve ever struggled with anxiety, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Anxiety has a way of taking one possibility and turning it into an entire story.
✔️ It fills in all the blanks.
✔️ It predicts outcomes.
✔️ It creates disasters that haven’t happened.
And before long, we’re emotionally exhausted from fighting battles that only exist in our minds.
For years, anxiety was one of my greatest struggles.
As women, we often carry the weight of everyone around us.
We worry about our children, our marriages, our finances, our health, our future.
And because we care deeply, our minds can easily drift into a constant cycle of “what if.”
But over time, God began teaching me something important.
I could not overcome anxiety by arguing with my thoughts.
I could not overcome it by endlessly searching for reassurance.
And I certainly couldn’t overcome it by imagining better outcomes.
The only thing that consistently changed my thinking was replacing fearful thoughts with God’s truth.
One of the most powerful habits I developed was praying Scripture.
Instead of praying my fears, I learned to pray God’s promises.
When anxiety whispered: “What if everything falls apart?”
God’s Word reminded me: “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you.” (Psalm 55:22)
When fear told me: “You’re not strong enough for this.”
God’s Word answered: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
When my mind raced with uncertainty, Scripture anchored me in truth.
And little by little, my mind began to change.
It didn’t happen overnight, but with consistency, my heart and mind grew stronger by the truth that anchored me in God’s Word.
I discovered that peace doesn’t come from knowing the future.
Peace comes from knowing the One who holds the future.
If anxiety has been weighing heavily on your heart lately, I put together one of my favorite resources to help.
I’ve created a free set of Scripture Prayer Cards that includes five powerful Bible verses and prayers you can use whenever anxiety begins to overwhelm your thoughts.
