I still remember the first time fear truly took hold of me.
I was only ten or eleven years old.
Up until then, life felt relatively safe and predictable. But after my first real encounter with death, something changed.
For months afterward, I struggled to sleep.
I would lie awake in bed for hours while my imagination ran wild with frightening thoughts and worst-case scenarios. Sometimes I was so afraid that I wouldn’t even move, convinced that if I could just stay perfectly still, the fear would somehow go away.
It didn’t.
The fear would fade for a while and then return without warning.
One conversation.
One news story.
One random thought.
And suddenly I was right back where I started.
This battle followed me well into adulthood.
Even today, while I have experienced tremendous victory, fear and anxiety are still areas where I must remain vigilant.
Over the years, I’ve learned something important:
Fear rarely starts with our circumstances.
It starts with where our focus is.
When Peter stepped out of the boat, he was able to do the impossible while his eyes remained fixed on Jesus.
The moment he shifted his attention to the wind and the waves, fear took over.
I think many of us live there.
We spend our days looking at:
✔️ The economy.
✔️ The headlines.
✔️ Our health.
✔️ Our children.
✔️ Our marriages.
✔️ Our uncertain future.
And before long, fear begins telling us stories about what might happen tomorrow.
One of the greatest breakthroughs in my own battle with fear came when I realized that defeating fear isn’t primarily about changing my circumstances.
It’s about learning to trust God’s sovereignty in the middle of them.
Fear says: “What if everything falls apart?”
Faith says: “What if God is still in control?”
That one shift in our perspective changes everything.
As I’ve spent time studying Psalms 46-50, God has shown me several practical ways to fight fear and strengthen my faith. These principles have helped me move from being controlled by fear to learning how to stand firm when fear comes knocking.
And that’s the key:
Fear will come.
The question is whether we allow it to stay.
I’ve shared all seven principles in my latest article, along with practical ways to apply them in everyday life.
