Have you ever noticed that exhaustion isn’t always physical?
Sometimes you’ve slept enough.
You’ve crossed things off your to-do list.
Maybe you’ve even taken a day off.
And yet...your soul still feels tired.
I’ve been thinking about that lately because Psalm 91 has been changing the way I understand rest.
For years, I assumed rest meant getting away from the things that were exhausting me.
If I could just finish this project...
Get through this season...
Take a vacation...
Finally have a slower schedule...
Then I would rest.
But that’s not the kind of rest Scripture promises.
Psalm 91 doesn’t say we’ll escape trouble.
It says we’ll find shelter in the middle of it.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
That verse has challenged me in a way I wasn’t expecting.
What if real rest isn’t found when life finally becomes quiet?
What if it’s found by learning to dwell with Christ while life is still noisy?
I think that’s one of the hardest lessons to learn.
Our instinct is to believe that peace depends on our circumstances.
God says peace depends on His presence.
The older I get, the more I realize that I can spend an hour resting on the couch and still feel anxious.
I can take a day off and still carry a heavy heart.
Because what my soul needs isn’t simply less work.
It needs more of Jesus.
That’s why His invitation in Matthew 11 has become so precious to me:
“Come to Me... and you will find rest for your souls.”
Not rest for your schedule.
Not rest for your calendar.
Rest for your soul.
The kind of rest that steadies your heart when life feels uncertain.
The kind of rest that quiets anxious thoughts.
The kind of rest that reminds you that Christ is enough—even when you aren’t.
I’ve been asking myself lately whether I’m trying to manufacture rest or receive it.
Am I trying harder?
Or am I learning to trust deeper?
There’s a tremendous difference.
One leaves us exhausted.
The other leaves us abiding.
And I think that’s what Psalm 91 is inviting us into.
Not an escape from life.
But a deeper life with Christ.
If you’ve been feeling weary lately, I wrote a deeper Bible study on three biblical ways to find the kind of rest that lasts—the kind that reaches your soul, not just your schedule.
It also includes a free printable of 10 Bible verses to help fight fear and anxiety, so you can continue meditating on God’s promises throughout the week.
