Have you ever felt like your past still has a hold on you?
Maybe you’ve confessed your sins and know that God has forgiven you, yet the memories remain. The enemy whispers that you’ll never really change. You replay old failures, old labels, and old regrets until they begin to feel like your identity.
Many Christians live this way.
They’ve been forgiven, but they still think like prisoners.
They’ve been set free, but they continue carrying the weight of who they used to be.
The apostle Paul reminds us that the gospel offers something far greater than forgiveness. In 1 Corinthians 6:11, he points us to a completely new identity.
“And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” (NKJV)
Notice what Paul doesn’t say.
He doesn’t say, “You’re trying to become different.”
He doesn’t say, “One day you’ll leave your past behind.”
He says, “Such were some of you.”
Past tense.
Because of Jesus, your past no longer defines your present.
You have been washed. Your sins have been cleansed, and you no longer stand guilty before God.
You have been sanctified. You have been set apart for God’s purposes. Your life now belongs to Him.
You have been justified. God has declared you righteous because of Christ. You don’t stand before Him condemned—you stand before Him accepted.
These are not promises for someday.
They are realities for every believer today.
The challenge is learning to believe what God says more than we believe the accusations of our past.
Leaving your past behind doesn’t happen because you forget it ever existed.
It happens because you begin to see yourself through the finished work of Christ instead of through your former life.
That’s the heart of our Identity in Christ Journey.
As we renew our minds with God’s Word, those old labels begin to lose their power. We stop introducing ourselves by our wounds, our failures, or our fears and begin living from the identity God has already given us.
In yesterday’s livestream, we spent time unpacking this beautiful verse and talking about what it means to truly leave our past behind and walk confidently into our identity in Christ.
I pray it encourages you to stop looking backward and begin embracing the person God says you already are.
