I had to ask myself an uncomfortable question during Bible study:

Why did I think I could live my life with boundaries in some areas and not in others?

I realized that I actually like boundaries—as long as I’m the one deciding where they belong.

It’s easy to accept God’s boundaries when they line up with our own ideas. But what happens when God draws the line somewhere different than we would?

We live in a culture that tells us, “Do what makes you happy.” And sometimes we quietly bring that philosophy into our relationship with God, assuming that if something makes us happy, God must approve of it.

But what if God’s boundaries aren’t keeping us from joy?

What if they’re leading us toward it?

That’s the question I explored while walking through Psalm 16.

God’s Boundaries Protect Us

David begins by describing God as his refuge: “Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust” (Psalm 16:1).

A refuge has boundaries. Its walls keep danger out.

In the same way, God’s boundaries aren’t evidence that He doesn’t want us to experience life. They can be evidence that He knows what is waiting outside those boundaries.

Then David declares that God Himself is his goodness and source of fulfillment.

When God is our source, we don’t have to keep looking elsewhere for what only He can give us.

God’s Boundaries Shape Us

Psalm 16 also shows us that the people we allow closest to us influence our direction.

David delighted in those who were set apart for God. Our inner circle eventually becomes an inner voice, shaping our values, decisions, and desires.

He also refused to participate in idolatry.

And idolatry isn’t always a statue. Sometimes it’s looking to a relationship, philosophy, personality, lifestyle, or another source for what only God can provide.

The question isn’t simply, “Do I have an idol?”

It’s:

“What am I expecting to give me what only God can give?”

God’s Boundaries Can Actually Be Pleasant

Perhaps the most beautiful part of Psalm 16 is verses 5–6:

“The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places.”

David doesn’t merely tolerate God’s boundaries.

He calls them pleasant.

He is content with the portion God has given him because God Himself is his inheritance.

And when God becomes our standard, comparison begins to lose its power. We don’t need another woman’s house, marriage, body, ministry, children, platform, or success to tell us whether our lives have value.

Christ becomes our standard—and our security.

The Path to Fullness of Joy

Psalm 16 ends with the answer:

“You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy.”

David doesn’t find joy by escaping God’s boundaries.

He finds it by following God within them.

God’s boundaries protect us.
They satisfy us.
They guide us.
They stabilize us.
They give us rest.
They give us hope.
And ultimately, they lead us to joy.

Maybe the problem isn’t that God has drawn too many boundaries.

Maybe we’ve forgotten who drew them.

God isn’t trying to keep us from the good life.

He is leading us toward a joy that doesn’t depend on circumstances, possessions, approval, pleasure, or getting our own way.

Maybe God’s boundaries aren’t the walls keeping us from the good life. Maybe they’re the lines showing us where the good life is found.
