For years, when I heard someone talk about the “secret place,” I immediately pictured a prayer closet.
A quiet room.
A favorite chair.
A place where I could close the door, open my Bible, and spend time with God.
And while those things are valuable, I’ve begun to wonder if many of us have unintentionally reduced the secret place to a location on our calendars.
A thirty-minute appointment.
A morning routine.
A daily task we either accomplish or feel guilty about missing.
As a mom, I’ve certainly experienced that guilt.
There have been seasons of life when uninterrupted quiet time felt almost impossible.
✔️ Small children.
✔️ Homeschooling.
✔️ Ministry responsibilities.
✔️ Deadlines.
✔️ Laundry.
✔️ Meals.
✔️ Appointments.
✔️ Life.
And whenever I missed my planned quiet time, I often felt as though I had somehow failed spiritually.
But recently, while reflecting on Psalm 91, something stood out to me.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Notice the word dwells.
Not visits.
Not occasionally stops by.
Not checks in for twenty minutes before starting the day.
Dwells.
Lives there.
Remains there.
What if the secret place isn’t merely a physical location?
What if it’s a continual awareness of God’s presence?
What if it is learning to carry the truths He speaks to us in the morning into every moment that follows?
David seems to have understood this.
Throughout the Psalms, he speaks about meditating on God’s Word day and night.
Not during a scheduled devotional block.
Day and night.
He had cultivated a relationship with God that extended far beyond a morning routine.
And perhaps that’s what many of us are longing for.
Not simply a better quiet time.
Not a more organized prayer journal.
Not another Bible reading plan.
But a deeper awareness of God’s presence throughout our ordinary lives.
The secret place becomes a refuge when fear rises.
A source of wisdom when life feels confusing.
A place of peace when circumstances feel overwhelming.
A place where our hearts continually return to God throughout the day.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that God isn’t interested in being one item on my daily schedule.
He wants to walk with me through the entire day.
Through the errands.
The dishes.
The meetings.
The interruptions.
The joys.
The frustrations.
Every part of it.
And maybe that’s what the secret place really is.
Not a room.
Not a chair.
Not a time slot.
But a life lived in continual fellowship with Him.

So relieved to know I have access 24/7 for everything I need...but it took me time to grow into this awareness with the Lord, and still learning that He really is enough in everything...
Amen; love that secret to read, because sometimes I feels bad if I don’t do my quiet time really every day. And when I don’t do that it is bcause I am so tired after work, that I can only sit on zofa and do nothing.
