One of the hardest things about our identity in Christ isn’t learning what the Bible says about us.
It’s remembering it when life gets loud.
We can read Scripture in the monring and feel encouraged. We can study what it means to be a child of God, forgiven, redeemed, chosen, and made new.
And then three hours later, someone says something that hurts us.
We compare ourselves to someone else.
We make a mistake.
We feel rejected.
We look at everything we haven’t accomplished.
And suddenly, we’re thinking things that don’t sound anything like the truth we’ve been reading.
I’ve experienced this myself!
That’s why I’ve become increasingly convinced that knowing our identity in Christ has to become more than something we study.
It has to become something we remember.
What We Believe About Ourselves Matters
Our identity in Christ gives us a foundation that circumstances cannot shake.
When our identity is built around our roles, accomplishments, appearance, relationships, or other people’s opinions, we’re standing on constantly shifting ground.
But when our identity is rooted in Christ, we have something solid to return to.
That doesn’t mean we’ll never struggle with insecurity.
It doesn’t mean we’ll never believe a lie.
It means we have somewhere to go when we recognize that we’ve started believing one.
We can go back to God’s Word.
We can ask:
What does God say is true about me?
And then we can allow His truth to replace the thoughts that don’t agree with it.
Sometimes We Need God’s Truth Right in Front of Us
One of the practices that has helped me tremendously is memorizing and meditating on Scripture.
I’ve found that when God’s Word becomes familiar to us, it gives us something to reach for when we’re struggling.
That’s why I created my 10 Bible Verses About My Identity in Christ bookmarks.
They’re simple.
They’re practical.
And that’s exactly why I like them.
You can print them and put them inside your Bible. You can laminate them and keep them somewhere you’ll see them regularly. The original resource was created specifically to give us Scripture we can easily return to as we remind ourselves of what God’s Word says about who we are in Christ.
And I’ve moved these bookmarks into my Resource Library, where they’re available for you to download along with more than 100 other resources for your walk with Christ.
You don’t need to opt in to get them.
They’re simply there for you to use.
Your Identity Doesn’t Change When Your Feelings Do
Maybe today you feel confident in who you are.
Maybe tomorrow you don’t.
Maybe today you feel close to God.
Maybe tomorrow you feel discouraged.
Maybe today you’re celebrating a victory.
Maybe tomorrow you’re struggling with an old insecurity you thought you’d already overcome.
None of those things change who you are in Christ.
Your feelings change. Your circumstances change. Your identity in Christ doesn’t.
That’s why I want to encourage you to keep God’s truth close.
Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed by insecurity to go looking for Scripture.
Put the truth somewhere you can see it now.
Read it.
Meditate on it.
Write it down.
Return to it when the old thoughts come back.
Because the goal isn’t simply to know more Bible verses.
The goal is to allow God’s truth to become the foundation from which we live.
