Faith isn’t just trusting God for the outcome. It’s learning to trust God’s wisdom when you don’t know what the outcome will be.
There are moments when faith feels easy.
We can trust God when the bills are paid, our children are doing well, our marriage feels secure, and the future looks predictable.
But what happens when the thing we’ve been praying about doesn’t change?
What happens when the future is uncertain, the answer doesn’t come, or the outcome we’re hoping for seems increasingly unlikely?
That’s when our faith becomes personal—and that’s also when our mind is put to the test.
When we’re afraid, our thoughts can quickly run ahead of us. We begin imagining everything that could go wrong. We try to figure out what God is doing, how He might fix the situation, and what we need to do to make sure the outcome we want actually happens.
And before long, we’re no longer simply trusting God.
We’re trying to manage the outcome ourselves.
Faith Requires a Different Way of Thinking
Abraham gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to trust God when we don’t know what comes next.
God made promises to him, but Abraham couldn’t see how those promises would be fulfilled. He had to keep walking with God without having all the answers.
That’s often what faith looks like for us, too.
Faith isn’t necessarily believing God will give us the outcome we want. It’s trusting that God knows what we need better than we do—and that His wisdom is greater than ours.
That requires a different way of thinking.
Instead of allowing fear to tell us what is going to happen, we bring those thoughts back under the truth of God’s Word.
Instead of asking, “How can I make this work?” we learn to ask, “Can I trust God with this?”
We Don’t Have to Believe Every Thought Fear Gives Us
One of the most important lessons in renewing our minds is learning that not every thought deserves our agreement.
Fear can sound convincing.
Circumstances can look overwhelming.
Our past experiences can tell us what we should expect.
But none of those things get the final word.
God’s Word does.
When our faith is being tested, we have an opportunity to stop and examine what we’re thinking:
Is this true?
Does this agree with God’s Word?
What does God say instead?
Sometimes the biggest battle isn’t happening around us.
It’s happening in our thoughts.
Great Faith Means Releasing Control
We often think surrender means giving something to God once and then never worrying about it again.
But sometimes surrender is something we have to do over and over.
We pray.
We surrender.
Then the worry comes back.
So we surrender again.
We don’t know what God is going to do, and that can be uncomfortable. But faith doesn’t require us to know the outcome. It requires us to know the One we’re trusting.
Abraham didn’t get everything right. His story includes moments when he tried to take matters into his own hands.
And yet Hebrews 11 still remembers him as a man of faith.
That’s encouraging because faith isn’t a performance.
It’s a walk.
We may stumble. We may struggle. We may need to surrender the same fear more than once.
But God’s grace meets us there.
What Is God Asking You to Trust Him With?
Maybe you’re facing uncertainty right now.
Maybe you’re praying about your family, your finances, your health, your marriage, your future, or something you simply can’t control.
The question may not be, “Do I have enough faith to believe everything will turn out the way I want?”
Maybe the deeper question is:
“Do I know God well enough to trust Him even when I don’t know what He’s going to do?”
That’s where faith and renewing our minds meet.
I wrote the full article about what happens when faith is tested—and how our thinking can either feed our fear or help us return to God’s truth.

And perhaps this is the prayer we need today:
“God, I don’t know what You’re going to do—but I know You, and I trust You.”
