A year and a half ago, I took A Little R & R off of social media.
Last week, I heard someone say something that I resonated with on a deep level:
Social media isn’t social media anymore. It’s algorithmic media.
Even more, they are algorithmic shopping platforms designed to addict you to their platform and keep you there for as long as they can.
I don’t know about you, but on the off-chance (and for me, it’s not a big one) that I scroll through my Facebook feed, I don’t see posts by friends.
I see:
Posts by pages I don’t follow
Ads
Posts from groups I’m not in
More ads
Maybe a post from a page or group I’ve followed
Another ad
If I happen to accidentally look at a picture too long, I’ll see 9 or 10 more posts from that page or group - whether I want to or not
Well, yet another ad
And that’s what my feed looks like.
I hate it!
I hear most other social media platforms are like that. I wouldn’t know. I’m not on them any longer.
I only stay on Facebook for family and close friends - but since the only way I can actually follow them is by searching for their profile…well, even that isn’t keeping me wanting to come back.
I’ve honestly wanted a way to connect with my readers on a more personal level, like I used to on my Facebook page.
And that is why I have started a Substack.
Here is what you get with my Substack:
