There was a season when I filled pages of my journal with truth statements.
Not Scripture exactly…but phrases built from it.
I wrote them in the mornings.
I repeated them throughout the day.
I tried to train my thoughts to line up with what I knew God said about me.
On the surface, it looked like I was doing everything right.
But I began to notice something I couldn’t ignore.
The words stayed on the page more than they settled into my thinking.
Because when pressure came, when I felt misunderstood, when I fell short, when old insecurities resurfaced, I didn’t respond from a place of truth.
I reacted from the same old patterns.
That’s when I started to see the difference I had been missing.
Speaking affirmations, even when they sound biblical, is not the same as knowing your identity in Christ.
Affirmations can become something we use to try to convince ourselves of the truth, but identity in Christ doesn’t begin with repetition.
It begins with what has already been established through Jesus.
Already finished.
Already secured.
Already spoken by God.
And that means I’m not trying to build something through my words.
I’m learning to live from something that already exists.
That shift exposed something deeper in me. I had been depending on a method instead of resting in what Christ had already done.
And as long as I stayed there, I would keep circling the same struggles, saying the right things, but not actually thinking differently when it mattered.
Understanding that difference started to change how I approached Scripture, my thoughts, and even my failures.
This didn’t happen all at once, but in a way that actually stuck with me and began bearing fruit.
I unpack why affirmations fall short — and what it actually looks like to walk in your identity in Christ — here:
