There are seasons when life feels like one long to-do list.
You wake up already thinking about everything that needs to be accomplished before the day is over.
Emails.
Laundry.
Meals.
Appointments.
Ministry.
Work.
Family.
Somewhere in the middle of all of it, you remember that you wanted to spend time with God today.
Maybe you squeeze in a few verses while your coffee brews.
Maybe you promise yourself you’ll read your Bible tonight...if you’re not too tired.
I’ve been there.
And I wonder if sometimes we’ve mistaken being busy for being faithful.
Psalm 23 gently reminds us that the Christian life was never meant to be lived at a frantic pace.
David doesn’t begin by talking about everything the sheep need to accomplish.
He begins with the Shepherd.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Everything else flows from that truth.
The Shepherd provides.
The Shepherd leads.
The Shepherd protects.
The Shepherd restores.
Notice something else.
“He makes me lie down in green pastures.”
Sometimes we don’t naturally choose rest.
We keep pushing.
Keep striving.
Keep carrying burdens God never asked us to carry.
But the Good Shepherd knows that weary sheep don’t thrive.
Neither do weary Christians.
One of my favorite verses in the psalm says,
“He restores my soul.”
Not my schedule.
Not my productivity.
My soul.
That’s the kind of restoration we all need.
And it only happens when we slow down long enough to sit in His presence.
The beautiful promise of Psalm 23 isn’t that life will always be easy.
David still walks through the valley.
Enemies are still present.
Difficult days still come.
But even there, he isn’t overcome by fear because the Shepherd is with him.
That’s the kind of rest Jesus offers us.
Not a life free from problems.
A heart that remains at peace because it knows the One leading the way.
If you’ve been feeling spiritually exhausted lately, maybe today isn’t another day to try harder.
Maybe today is an invitation to slow down.
To open your Bible.
To sit quietly before the Lord.
And to let your Shepherd restore your soul.
I’ve been refreshing one of my older Bible studies on Psalm 23, and I was reminded all over again how much this familiar passage has to teach us about worry, peace, and finding true rest in Christ.
If you’d like to dive deeper, I walk through six powerful lessons from Psalm 23 and how each one helps us learn to trust our Good Shepherd more fully.
